Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between psychotherapy and counselling?

The overlap between the two terms is generally bigger than the differences. However, for most people the difference is probably best thought of as the depth and length of the work; psychotherapy is usually understood to be a longer and more in depth process. Another interesting difference is the length ad depth of training needed for recognition by a professional body. Registration as a psychotherapist with UKCP requires around double the amount needed to become recognised as a member of the BACP. I am registered with the UKCP and an accredited member of the BACP. Most importantly, neither counsellor or psychotherapist are currently protected titles so it’s always worth researching the aegis under which someone may describe themselves using either term.

How many sessions will I need?

A difficult question to answer definitively, as I am experienced in both long and short term work.

Occasionally someone may decide after an initial assessment that my work is not for them, or at least not yet. Some other people choose to access and use my services as a source of support long term maybe for some years.  However, the majority of people I work with report finding between 6 and 12 sessions to be useful in enabling them to achieve what they are seeking. The most important thing rom my point of view is that we keep checking that you are getting what you  want and need which may be useful for you from our work together.

Supposing my circumstances change?

If you find yourself in a position where you want to continue but for some unforeseen circumstances can no longer afford to see me, I invite you to discuss this with me as some concessions of fees can sometimes be negotiated and accommodated depending on circumstances.

How do I know if my therapist is any appropriately trained and qualified?

UKCP and BACP membership and accreditation may offer some reassurance however as neither are protected titles so it is worth checking and asking any questions you may feel are important to know.

How do I get started?

I generally suggest we start with an initial assessment session to enable you to find out more about me and how I work, for me to find out more about what you are seeking from the work and then we will have a much better informed understanding of how I might best be of help to you. I am easily accessible by public transport, there is unrestricted parking immediately outside my house and I have a secure enclosed garden for bicycles.

What if I think it is not working or simply not for me?

My way of working is very open and receptive to hearing from you how you think the work is going and this is especially important if there is any aspect of the work you are confused or unhappy with.

What about if I need to cancel or change a session?

I will do my best to accommodate any last minute changes however if we cannot rearrange within a time frame acceptable to me, I reserve the right to ask for the full fee for any session cancelled or changed at less than 48 hours notice.

Is counselling confidential?

Our contract of confidentiality is that I do not talk about you or anything we discuss away from my work unless I have reason to believe that you or anyone else is in real or imminent danger. I work in accordance with the codes of ethics of the BACP and UKCP
